Xiaomi HyperOS (Chinese: 小米澎湃OS) is an operating system developed by Xiaomi for its smartphones, tablets, smart home products, wearables and vehicles. It was introduced in October 2023 and replaced MIUI, the company's earlier Android-based user interface, on its mobile devices. Xiaomi presents HyperOS as a platform that links products from different categories into one ecosystem, and it combines a modified Linux kernel and Android framework components with Xiaomi's own Vela system for low-power devices.
Background and naming
Xiaomi has described HyperOS as the outcome of a long development effort. According to the company's account, research on the system began with the Xiaomi Vela platform in 2017, while the MIUI line dates from 2010. Vela is based on the NuttX real-time operating system and was aimed at Internet of Things devices. On October 23, 2023, the official MIUI social media accounts were renamed to HyperOS, and Lei Jun, Xiaomi's chief executive, announced the new system ahead of its debut.
Launch and rollout
HyperOS 1.0 was presented on October 26, 2023, at a launch event in Beijing, and it debuted on the Chinese Xiaomi 14 series. The first developer builds followed in late October 2023, and the first stable over-the-air update went to a Redmi K60 Extreme Edition in December 2023. The system was later extended to Xiaomi's cars: in December 2023 the Xiaomi SU7 was announced as the first electric vehicle with a HyperOS-based cockpit. The first tablet with the system preinstalled was released in February 2024.
Xiaomi runs separate builds for different markets. The main variants are for mainland China, the Global market, India, and the European Economic Area. The European build differs from the Global build in adapting to regional rules on advertising and personal data, including the GDPR of the European Union.
Architecture
Xiaomi's architecture diagram, published in 2023, describes five layers: hardware, a kernel layer, a framework layer, a cross-device connectivity layer called HyperConnect, and applications. The kernel and framework layers differ by device class. Phones and tablets use a Linux kernel with Android services, whereas IoT products use the Vela kernel with Vela frameworks. HyperConnect is intended to let devices running different kernels communicate with each other.
Industry commentators have disagreed about how far HyperOS departs from Android. Some describe it as a customization layer built on Android, similar in kind to earlier Android skins. Others argue that Xiaomi rebuilt core components and integrated Vela deeply enough to make it a new platform rather than a cosmetic update. In 2024 an executive at Xiaomi said the company could in principle build a functionally identical system on its own kernel or on Linux, and that it had kept the Android kernel for phones and tablets mainly because of the existing app ecosystem. A Huawei engineer publicly argued in 2023 that Xiaomi should remove Android from the codebase, pointing to the depth of the system's dependence on Android. Xiaomi has not adopted that position.
Versions
- HyperOS 1.0 (October 2023), based on Android 14.
- HyperOS 2.0, released in October 2024 and based on Android 15, with a beta for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra in March 2025.
- HyperOS 3.0, based on Android 16. Its first public beta opened in China in August 2025, and the stable version began rolling out in September 2025 with a global launch that followed. Its features include the HyperIsland live-activity feature, which resembles Apple's Dynamic Island, a redesigned visual style, AI tools branded as HyperAI, improved Gallery functions, and connectivity with iPhone and iPad.
- HyperOS 3.1, which reached stable rollout in China in March 2026 and then globally, starting with the Xiaomi 17 series.
- HyperOS 3.3, an interim update that began rolling out in July 2026 and moved current flagships to Android 17.
- HyperOS 4, announced in China in August 2026. Sources disagree on its stable release date: one tracking site gives September 7, 2026 for the first Chinese builds, while the English Wikipedia infobox lists a version dated September 18, 2026 for China and a separate global build from 2025. A press outlet expected a global launch around October 2026, following the pattern of earlier releases.
Xiaomi's global rollout of HyperOS 3 was staged across several waves between October 2025 and March 2026, with different models receiving the update at different times. Updates are not guaranteed to arrive on the dates listed for a given device.
Performance and resource claims
Xiaomi says HyperOS improves on MIUI in several measurable ways, including smaller system updates, lower storage footprint, and faster app launches. Press reports relayed figures such as a 15% speed-up in opening third-party apps, a reduction of around 80% in the memory used by over-the-air updates, and a 24% smaller app footprint. These are vendor claims and have not been independently verified in a single controlled benchmark.
Reception and debate
Reviewers have generally found HyperOS cleaner and less cluttered than MIUI, particularly in its reduced preinstalled software. Some commentators have also noted that the update policy has improved compared with the MIUI period, when a single model could be left behind across several Android versions. Older devices still reach the end of their support cycles, and some older phones that received HyperOS kept Android 13. Discussion of HyperOS has also centered on its relationship to Android, as described above, and on how its cross-device features will be developed as part of Xiaomi's wider smartphone and IoT strategy.
