The iPhone Duo is a foldable smartphone developed and marketed by Apple. It is the first iPhone to use a folding design, opening into a tablet-sized inner screen that sits beside a smaller outer screen on the back. Apple presents the device as an extension of the iPhone line rather than a separate product category, and its software was rebuilt to handle the different screen states the hinge creates.
Announcement and availability
Apple unveiled the device on 9 September 2026 at an event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, where it was shown alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders opened on 16 October 2026. According to Wikipedia's entry, sales were scheduled to begin on 23 October in about 70 countries and regions, with a further 28 markets scheduled for 30 October. The device is offered in two colours, star white and night sky, and its frame is made of grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish.
Design
When opened, the device has a 7.6-inch inner display; its closed outer display measures 5.4 inches. Apple describes the open device as the thinnest iPhone it has produced. GSMArena's specification listing gives a thickness of 5.2 mm unfolded and 11.3 mm folded, with a mass of 254 g. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally when the device changes state. Apple states that the outer display offers about 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner display is about 50 percent larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The front of the display uses Ceramic Shield 2, the rear uses Ceramic Shield, and the device carries an IP68 dust and water resistance rating. The inner screen has a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and make the hinge crease less noticeable. Both panels support ProMotion variable refresh rates and an always-on mode. Apple's rival foldables made by Samsung and others had used similar hinge-and-crease designs for several years before the iPhone Duo arrived.
Biometric authentication is handled by Touch ID integrated into the side button; the device has no Face ID system. Pre-launch reporting from analysts had predicted this choice, which was made to free up internal space for the hinge and batteries.
Hardware and performance
The device uses the Apple A20 Pro system-on-chip, which Apple says is shared with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple's India product page describes a dual 16-core Neural Engine built for on-device artificial intelligence workloads. Apple also says the device contains a custom vapor chamber for thermal management and a dual-battery architecture. MacRumors reports that the two batteries, one in each half, are managed as a single unit. Reported battery figures include up to 24 hours of typical use while switching between displays, along with video playback times of up to 44 hours on the outer screen. MacRumors also cites a vapor chamber that offers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro; these figures come from secondary reporting rather than Apple's own specification sheet.
Cameras
The rear camera system includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera. Apple describes an integrated optical-quality 2x telephoto option and macro photography. The inner display has an under-display camera for FaceTime calls, and the outer display houses a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera. Apple says the folding form allows camera modes that are not possible on other iPhone models.
Software
The device ships with iOS 27, which Apple describes as reimagined for multiple poses and orientations. Changes include a vertical Dock accessible from the side of the screen, a repositioned status bar, and a vertical Dynamic Island on both displays. Two apps can run side by side in Split View, and the system switches content between displays when the device is flipped. The phone can also display a StandBy mode on either screen, even when it is not charging.
Apple says it worked with third-party developers, including Netflix, Zoom and Slack, to adapt their apps to the dual-screen layout, and it has released developer tools so that other APIs-based apps can add support. Apple also presents Siri AI and Apple Intelligence as core features, with its privacy and security framework applied to personal context data, as described in the company's announcements.
Reception and market context
Tom's Guide published a hands-on review that praised the phone-to-tablet transition and the software's response to device angle, while noting that the crease is still visible and that the price is high. Forbes observed that Apple enters a foldable market in which Android manufacturers such as Samsung, Honor and Google have had a head start of about seven years. Forbes also argued that iPhone users, unlike Android users, have only one Apple foldable to choose from, which may make the Duo the default benchmark for the category.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, as reported by GSMArena, predicted that the iPhone Duo would become the predominant foldable on the market by early the following year. These are forecasts rather than verified results.
Naming and rumors
Before the launch, the device was widely rumored as the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold. MacRumors noted that the name Duo had also circulated, and that earlier Apple products such as the PowerBook Duo and MagSafe Duo used the same word. Other companies' products, including Microsoft's Surface Duo and Intel's Core Duo processors, also carry the name, which MacRumors suggested could have made Apple cautious. According to GSMArena's report of Gurman's analysis, Apple chose Duo partly because it is three letters long, like Air and Pro, and because it signals the dual-screen design. Gurman also reported that Apple planned future foldables named Duo Max, Duo mini and Duo SE; these were unconfirmed rumors as of the launch.
Leaks were accurate about the book-style form, two displays, titanium construction, Touch ID and premium pricing, according to The Apple Post's retrospective. Some specifics differed: analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted displays of about 7.8 and 5.5 inches, while Apple's actual sizes are 7.6 and 5.4 inches.
Open questions
Several aspects of the iPhone Duo were still untested in the weeks after its announcement. Long-term durability of the hinge and the visibility of the crease under daily use have not been established by independent long-term testing. Its sales volume, supply levels and long-term effect on the foldable market remain unknown, and the status of the rumored additional foldable models is uncertain.
