The iPhone 18 Pro is a smartphone designed and sold by Apple as the smaller of two Pro models in the iPhone 18 generation. It succeeds the iphone-17 Pro and runs Apple's iOS 27. Apple's September 2026 launch centred on a new processor built on a 2-nanometre process, a revised camera system, a smaller Dynamic Island and changes to the cooling and wireless hardware.
Announcement and release
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max at a September 2026 event, with the company's specifications published the same day. Both models went on sale on 18 September 2026. The United States launch price was US$1,199 for the base model, and the UK price was £1,199. Both Pro models start at 256 GB of storage.
Pre-launch coverage had anticipated under-display Face ID, a long-rumoured change that repeatedly appeared in leaks and was later reported as delayed. Launch reporting instead describes a smaller Dynamic Island that retains the existing Face ID system, so the rumoured full-screen design did not materialise on the Pro models.
Design and display
The phone keeps the 6.3-inch class display of its predecessor. It uses a Super Retina XDR OLED panel with ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz, an Always-On mode, and a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. Apple's official specifications list a weight of 211 g and a depth of 8.75 mm.
The Dynamic Island is redesigned to be smaller and can show up to three Live Activities at once. Apple offers four finishes: Burgundy, Glacier, Silver and Black.
Teardown analyses published after release noted a relocated front-camera assembly that connects through several separate cables, and a logic EEPROM chip that is no longer covered by a shield. Commentators also observed that the storage and power chips are sandwiched between motherboard layers, which makes some repairs harder than before.
Processor and thermal management
The iPhone 18 Pro uses the A20 Pro chip, which is fabricated on a 2-nanometre process. It has a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple's launch material emphasised on-device AI features within iOS 27, including Apple Intelligence and an upgraded Siri.
Apple moved the A20 Pro so that it sits directly against a vapour chamber through a new thermal pad material. According to Apple, the vapour chamber has three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro. The company says this is intended to sustain performance during demanding workloads.
Camera system
The Pro models carry three 48-megapixel rear cameras: a main camera with a variable aperture, an ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto camera. The front camera is an 18-megapixel Center Stage unit with an ƒ/1.9 aperture. Apple lists support for ProRAW, Apple Log 2, and 4K Cinematic mode at up to 30 fps with Dolby Vision, as well as ProRes recording up to 4K at 60 fps.
The variable aperture is the most notable imaging change, allowing the main lens to adjust its aperture for different lighting and depth-of-field conditions. This is a feature commonly associated with the camera hardware of dedicated cameras rather than smartphones.
Connectivity and battery
The phone includes Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The Pro lineup also introduces the C2 cellular modem, which Apple says improves cellular efficiency and upload speeds compared with the earlier C1X. Connectivity includes 5G sub-6 GHz support, and the phone uses USB-C.
Apple rates battery life as up to 24 hours of typical use and up to 36 hours of video playback. Apple's official battery figures are given as runtimes rather than capacity in milliampere-hours. Third-party listings give differing values for the battery capacity and RAM, so those details should be treated as unconfirmed unless Apple publishes them.
Models and product line
The iPhone 18 Pro is part of a September 2026 lineup that also includes the iPhone 18 Pro Max and a foldable model marketed as the iPhone Duo. The standard iPhone 18 was not part of the September launch and was expected to follow in a later release cycle, according to pre-launch reporting.
Reception and significance
Launch-period reviews and industry commentary focused on the thermal redesign, the 2-nanometre processor, and the variable-aperture camera as the principal advances. Earlier speculation about a full-screen design with under-display Face ID was not borne out at launch. Its significance lies mainly in the transition to a 2-nanometre chip and the expansion of on-device neural processing in the Pro line.
