Overview
The Surface Laptop Ultra is a 15-inch notebook computer made by Microsoft's Surface hardware line. It is the highest-performance model in that line and uses an Arm-based processor co-designed with NVIDIA, the RTX Spark platform. Microsoft positions it for workloads such as running large language models locally, AI content generation, 3D graphics, video editing, and software development. Unlike earlier Surface laptops, which relied on Intel or Qualcomm processors, its central processor and graphics processor come from the same NVIDIA-led platform.
Announcement and availability
Microsoft first showed the machine in late May 2026 at the Computex trade show, together with NVIDIA, which supplies the silicon. Pre-orders opened on 7 October 2026, and retail availability began on 16 October 2026. Microsoft described it as the most powerful Surface PC it has made. Commercial versions are sold separately under the name Surface Laptop Ultra for Business, which begins at a higher price in Microsoft's business store.
Hardware
Processor and graphics
The RTX Spark platform combines an Arm-based Grace CPU with a Blackwell-architecture GPU. CPU configurations have either 18 or 20 cores. The GPU has either 5,120 or 6,144 CUDA cores, depending on the configuration. Microsoft and NVIDIA state that the system can reach up to one petaflop of FP4 AI compute. Because the platform is built as a single package, the CPU and GPU share one pool of memory rather than keeping separate banks, which is the defining architectural choice of the machine. Support for CUDA gives the device compatibility with a large body of existing NVIDIA-based software, though the Arm instruction set means some legacy x86 applications depend on translation layers.
Memory and storage
The memory is LPDDR5X, offered in 24, 32, 48, 64, and 128 GB options, all shared between the CPU and GPU. Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded after purchase, so the choice has to be made at the time of ordering. Storage ranges from 512 GB to 2 TB of NVMe solid-state storage. Reports differ on whether the drive is user-replaceable: some sources describe removable drives, with different PCIe generations depending on capacity.
Display and chassis
The screen is a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen using mini-LED backlighting. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a rated peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits. The chassis is in two colours, Platinum and Nightfall. Microsoft gives the weight as under 4.5 lb (about 2 kg) and the thickness as under 18 mm. The trackpad is haptic and considerably larger than the one on the standard 15-inch Surface.
Ports and connectivity
Reported port layouts include three USB-C ports, one USB-A port, HDMI, a full-size SD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. One USB-C port uses a detachable magnetic connector, which Microsoft describes as a first for a universal USB-C standard. Sources differ on the exact port count, so the figures above should be treated as reported rather than confirmed.
Software and platform
The device runs Windows 11 on Arm, in Home or Pro editions depending on configuration. As a Copilot+ PC, it includes the Windows AI features and the Copilot assistant that Microsoft has built into its recent devices. The Arm-based design places it in the same product wave as NVIDIA's N1X-series chips, which compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 processors in the Windows laptop market.
Configurations and pricing
The US list price starts at $2,599.99 for the entry configuration, which has 18 CPU cores, 24 GB of memory, and 512 GB of storage. The highest-end model, with 20 CPU cores, 128 GB of memory, and 1 TB of storage, is priced at $5,899.99. Intermediate models range from about $3,000 to $4,700 depending on memory and storage. The price difference between memory tiers is large; moving from 64 GB to 128 GB on the same 1 TB model is reported to add $1,600. Prices outside the United States were not finalised at the time of the pre-order announcement. A German price had not been confirmed, and an unofficial leak suggested a figure near 2,000 euros for the lowest model.
Reception and analysis
Microsoft claims that the machine generates AI images 4.3 times faster than a MacBook Pro with Apple's M5 Pro chip and produces video 6.2 times faster. These are the company's own measurements, and independent benchmarks had not been published at the time of writing. Commentators have noted that the premium price and large memory configurations appeal mainly to developers, researchers, and professionals who need to run large models locally. Some reviewers argue that buyers who mainly want Copilot features and longer battery life would be better served by cheaper Snapdragon X2 Surface models. Industry reporting also notes that a global shortage of memory and storage chips has pushed up prices for many PC makers, which affects the pricing of premium machines such as this one.
