JAC Motors is the trade name of Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp., Ltd. (安徽江淮汽车集团股份有限公司), a automobile and commercial-vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province in eastern China. Its roots go back to a truck and bus producer founded in 1964. The group is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, is controlled by provincial government interests, and sells light trucks, pickups, MPVs, SUVs, sedans and electric vehicles in China and in dozens of export markets. It is best known abroad for inexpensive light commercial vehicles and, in China, for its premium Zunjie (尊界) brand launched with Huawei.

History

The company's history is usually dated to the founding of the Hefei automobile factory on 20 May 1964, although its predecessors were engaged in other equipment manufacturing earlier. The first batch of exports followed in 1990. The HFC1061 light-duty truck, launched in 1996, became a volume product for the company. Jianghuai Automobile was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2001. The firm entered passenger vehicles with an MPV in 2002, completed a full range of heavy, medium and light commercial vehicles in 2003, and introduced its first sedan in 2008. Sources differ on some dates: one account gives 30 September 1999 as the establishment date of the listed company, which was spun out of the older factory, and the group took its present name in November 2016.

Expansion accelerated in the late 2010s. The company opened a design centre in Turin, Italy, in 2005, and in 2019 completed the joint acquisition of Allur Group, a Kazakh automotive group. Its cumulative exports reached one million units in December 2022. In December 2023 it signed a strategic agreement with Huawei on intelligent new energy vehicles.

Ownership and partnerships

JAC's ownership is closely tied to the Anhui provincial government and to German automaker Volkswagen. In 2017 JAC and Volkswagen formed a joint venture, originally called JAC Volkswagen and later renamed Volkswagen Anhui, to produce electric vehicles in Hefei. In June 2020 Volkswagen raised its stake in that venture to 75%, leaving JAC with 25%. The 2020 agreement also contemplated a Volkswagen investment in JAC's parent company, but accounts consulted for this entry do not agree on whether that element was completed, so it should be treated as uncertain.

The Sehol (思皓) brand illustrates how these ties have worked in practice. Launched in 2018 by the joint venture, it sold rebadged JAC products and passed to JAC's control in 2020 after Volkswagen's stake grew. Reference works differ on when the brand was discontinued, with dates ranging from 2023 to 2024.

The company also works with several technology and industrial partners, including AI-related and automotive suppliers, and its Zunjie line depends on Huawei's intelligent-driving and digital systems.

Products and business segments

JAC reports two main segments. The commercial vehicle business covers light, medium and heavy trucks, buses, vans and pickups. The passenger vehicle business covers MPVs, SUVs, sedans, and new energy models under the JAC, Refine, Yiwei and other sub-brands. In 2025 the commercial segment remained the larger source of revenue, while passenger vehicles grew fastest, with the Zunjie S800 luxury model, which went on sale on 30 May 2025, becoming the brand's flagship. Pickups are a notable line; the company reported that its pickup sales in 2025 exceeded 60,000 units and ranked second in the industry.

Research spending is high relative to revenue. The company reported patent filings and a growing team of engineers, and it has focused on vehicle integration, application software, core component development and low-carbon manufacturing. Its battery and internal combustion programmes run alongside electric development, reflecting a dual strategy in the transition to new energy vehicles.

Financial performance

JAC's results have been volatile in the 2020s. For 2024 the company reported revenue of about 42.1 billion yuan, a fall of roughly 6% year on year, and a net loss of about 1.78 billion yuan, after a small profit in 2023. Vehicle and chassis sales that year were about 403,000 units, down about 7%.

For 2025 revenue rose 10.35% to about 46.48 billion yuan, while the net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed to about 17.03 billion yuan. Total vehicle and chassis sales fell 4.72% to about 384,100 units, with roughly 235,000 commercial and 149,000 passenger vehicles. Passenger-vehicle revenue rose by almost half, while commercial-vehicle revenue declined. The company attributed a large part of its losses to its share of losses at the Volkswagen Anhui joint venture, and to weaker exports amid intensifying competition overseas. Overseas revenue fell about 14% in 2025, though overseas business still accounted for roughly 47% of main-business revenue. For 2026 the company set targets of about 424,000 vehicles and about 65 billion yuan in revenue, a rise of nearly 40%.

International operations

JAC describes itself as exporting to more than 130 countries and regions. Its most significant export markets have been in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, where light trucks and affordable passenger cars sell well. The company has pursued local assembly through complete-knock-down plants in several countries, and the Allur acquisition in Kazakhstan gave it a foothold in Central Asia. Analysts have noted that exports have become an increasingly large share of total volume, and that they carry higher margins than domestic sales, which is why the decline in overseas revenue in 2025 drew attention.

Challenges and debates

Several issues recur in analyses of JAC. Its own annual report acknowledged that outside its Zunjie line its passenger vehicles lack strong brand pricing power and compete at a disadvantage against mainstream joint-venture brands and leading Chinese electric-vehicle makers. Its profitability has depended on the joint venture and on exports, both of which have faced pressure. Its dependence on Volkswagen for electrification and on Huawei for software has also made its strategy sensitive to the decisions of partners. Finally, the success of the premium Zunjie brand, which relies on a higher-priced segment dominated by foreign luxury makers, is central to the company's stated goal of shifting from a commercial-vehicle producer to a technology-led company.
