The Huawei Mate 90 is a series of premium smartphones produced by Huawei and launched in October 2026 as the successor to the Mate 80 line. The series is aimed at the top of the market and relies on Huawei's own processors, its HarmonyOS operating system, and in-house camera hardware. Its launch was widely read as part of Huawei's continued push for self-sufficiency in chips.
Launch and availability
Huawei held the unveiling in Shanghai on 1 October 2026, and one trade report described the event as the company's autumn flagship launch. Huawei pulled back the curtain on its autumn flagship on October 1, 2026, launching the Mate 90 series at an event in Shanghai. Sales opened the same day; one encyclopedia entry states that the series officially went on sale at 12:08 that day. Prices start at RMB 5,999 for the standard model, which one report converted to roughly US$895 at the time of launch.
Model lineup
The Mate 90 series comes in five models: Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max, Mate 90 Pro Collector's Edition, and Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design. The Pro Max Collector's Edition and RS Ultimate Design sit at the top of the range, with the RS variant using a different materials and color treatment.
A separate accessory, the Ruiying Z10 teleconverter, was shown in pre-launch unboxing videos. It was described as having a 1-inch sensor and 10x optical zoom, and it easily attaches to the main camera module of the Pro Max and RS Ultimate handsets.
Hardware
Display
Screen sizes vary by model. The Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro feature 6.75-inch displays, while the Mate 90 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch panel. Some listings give the standard model's screen as 6.8 inches, which is a minor discrepancy among sources. The panels are OLED with a 120 Hz refresh rate, and the Mate 90 Pro uses dual-layer OLED. Huawei states that the Pro and above models support 12000-nit peak brightness, a figure that is a manufacturer claim. The front uses a third-generation Kunlun Glass and ultra-reliable basalt architecture.
Processors
The standard model uses the Kirin 9030. It is a 5G-capable SoC that improves the device's overall performance by 27%. Other variants use different chips: the Mate 90 Pro uses the Kirin 9035, and the Mate 90 Pro Max and Collectors Edition use the Kirin 9050 Pro. Huawei's lab tests report performance gains of 27% for the Mate 90, 20% for the Mate 90 Pro, and 31% for the Mate 90 Pro Max Premium Edition compared with the respective previous-generation models. Independent details about the manufacturing process are limited; one report notes that the process node for the Kirin 9030 is unconfirmed.
The chip strategy is shaped by export restrictions. It is the fourth straight flagship cycle in which Huawei has leaned entirely on its own silicon rather than Qualcomm's Snapdragon line, a streak that began after the company was cut off from most US chip technology. Background on the underlying hardware is covered in semiconductor and integrated circuit articles.
Cameras
The top-tier models retain a variable-aperture main camera. The Huawei Mate 90 series continues to use a variable-aperture 50 camera system, giving users control over light and depth through a physical blade structure. Meanwhile, a 1/1.28-inch sensor underneath supports maximum light intake with 18EV ultra-high-dynamic-range technology. The top-of-the-line model comes with up to a 200MP telephoto camera for 4x optical zoom shots.
Camera configurations differ across sources. One report lists the standard model with 50MP primary (RYYB, f/1.4-f/4.0, OIS), 50MP telephoto (up to 4x optical), 40MP ultrawide (f/2.2), while another says the standard and Pro models may have a 50MP lens. The front camera is a 13MP f/2.0 ultra-wide front camera with autofocus and a 3D Depth Sensing Camera. Huawei also specifies 4x optical zoom, 8x optical quality zoom, 100x digital zoom, and up to 4K 3840 × 2160 video recording across the top three models. The sensor and imaging pipeline are described further in the camera article.
Battery and charging
The Mate 90 has a 6,600mAh battery with 66W wired charging, 5W wired reverse charging, and 50W wireless charging with wireless reverse charging. A Chinese encyclopedia entry instead gives higher charging figures for the Pro and above, stating Pro and above support 100W wired fast charging and 80W wireless super fast charging. These figures conflict, and the discrepancy has not been resolved in the sources reviewed.
Design and biometrics
The series keeps the punch-hole layout introduced with earlier models. These holes house a selfie camera and a 3D depth-sensing camera for photos and face unlock. Huawei says the Mate 90 series improves authentication accuracy with on-device AI and specialized algorithms. All four models have 3D Facial Recognition (three punch-hole cutouts), a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and Kunlun Glass. The standard model's body measures 161.9 x 75.7 x 8 mm (6.37 x 2.98 x 0.31 in) and weighs 217 g (7.65 oz). Colors include Lattice Green, Lattice Pink, Zero Degree White, and Obsidian Black.
Software
The series ships with HarmonyOS 7.0. Huawei's feature list includes live streaming mode, satellite SMS and image sending, outdoor exploration mode, Celia Notes, Celia AI calls, and more.
Positioning and reception
A Chinese encyclopedia entry says that the Mate 90 series is benchmarked against the Apple iPhone 18 Pro, targeting the high-end flagship bar-phone market. Because the series is recent, independent long-term reviews were limited at the time of writing, and most available evaluations relied on launch-day data and manufacturer claims.
Specification discrepancies and leaks
Specifications published before launch did not match the final product. A January 2026 leak, for example, mentioned that the series would feature core configurations such as the Kirin 9040 chip, under-display 3D facial recognition, a 100-megapixel main camera, and a 7000mAh battery. The final lineup used different chips and a 6,600 mAh battery. Readers should therefore treat pre-launch reports as provisional and check figures against Huawei's official announcement and the retail specifications for each variant.
