GPT-6 is OpenAI's sixth-generation line of generative language models, released as a set of proprietary systems with different speed, cost, and capability tiers. Its predecessor was GPT-5.6, and the models are offered through ChatGPT, OpenAI's Codex coding tools, and the API. Like earlier generations in the GPT-5 series, GPT-6 belongs to the generative pre-trained transformer tradition of large language models.

Background and naming

Speculation about a successor to GPT-5 circulated for months before launch. In 2025, an analyst's remark that GPT-6 would arrive before the end of that year went viral on X, but OpenAI officials denied the reports. The model that eventually appeared was first shown under the codename Astra. Wikipedia lists the flagship as "GPT-6 Astra," while some secondary coverage states that Astra is simply the name of the GPT-6 generation's top model rather than a separate product.

Model variants

Astra is the flagship. OpenAI describes it as its most capable model for business, with advanced reasoning, computer use, and stronger writing and design judgment. Its public specifications, as summarized by a third-party site, include a 1,050,000-token context window, a 128K maximum output, text and image input, and an April 30, 2026 knowledge cutoff. Pricing starts at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.

Sol and Luna are faster and cheaper models. According to OpenAI, they build on the advances behind GPT-6 Astra, bringing much of its strengths into faster and more affordable models to support work at scale. OpenAI also stated that API prices for these two models were 50% lower compared with GPT‑5.6 promotional pricing.

Instant appears in Wikipedia's infobox and timeline as a separate release on October 8, 2026, whereas OpenAI's own announcements describe the consumer rollout in terms of Sol and Luna. The naming of the consumer-facing tiers therefore differs somewhat across sources.

Release timeline

Astra was first released as a limited preview on September 3, 2026, the same day it was unveiled. Wikipedia reports that the company publicly released the model to paid users the following day, in a restricted version that rejects certain prompts in areas such as cybersecurity. Sol and Luna were released on September 22 in ChatGPT's work and Codex environments and in the API. On October 7, 2026, Sol reached ChatGPT chat for paid plans, and Luna became available to free and Go users the following day.

Intelligent UI

GPT-6 in ChatGPT is paired with a feature called Intelligent UI. It dynamically combines text, visuals, and interactive elements based on the question and the answer's content. Users can also create interactive tools directly within a conversation, such as calculators, bill splitters, and games. OpenAI further states that the system can begin answering while it continues to reason, progressively adding information to the response instead of waiting for the entire reasoning process to finish.

Reported capabilities

OpenAI says Astra is state-of-the-art on computer use, browsing, professional work, software engineering, cybersecurity, and science. The company also says the model was trained to complete tasks in fewer tokens with fewer retries, which it presents as a cost advantage. A third-party summary of OpenAI's figures reports a score of 100% on the ExploitBench cybersecurity test, compared with 78.5% for Sol, and a hallucination rate of 4.2%, compared with 12.2% for Sol. These are company-reported results and have not been independently verified in the material reviewed. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, has suggested that the model could eventually be regarded as an early form of artificial general intelligence, a characterization that remains a claim rather than an established assessment.

Safety measures and access restrictions

GPT-6 Astra is one of the first models that OpenAI has placed under its most serious cyber-risk category. OpenAI says Astra meets the "Critical" cybersecurity threshold under its Preparedness Framework. The public version refuses advanced cyber tasks like proof-of-concept exploits; looser safeguards go to vetted organizations through the Daybreak program. Wikipedia reports that the release was postponed to add safeguards after a series of cyberattacks in July 2026 that involved OpenAI agents; this account appears in only one of the sources reviewed. For enterprise customers, enterprise access is off by default until an admin enables it.

Limitations and open questions

Much of the available information about GPT-6 comes from OpenAI's announcements and from secondary coverage of them. Benchmark results are mostly self-reported, and independent evaluation was limited at the time of writing. Dates and product names also vary between sources, so the timeline above should be read as the most consistent reconstruction of the available reports rather than as an authoritative record. Questions remain about the reliability of hallucination reduction claims, the effectiveness of restricting prompts for security-sensitive uses, and how the Intelligent UI interacts with reinforcement-learning training methods that OpenAI has not fully described.
