Overview

The .ai internet top-level domain is a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. Although it was created for a small territory, it has become the most recognisable namespace for the artificial intelligence sector. Its registration fees have also become a large share of Anguilla's public finances.

History and administration

The zone was introduced in February 1995, when the .ai namespace was introduced on 16 February 1995. The Government of Anguilla sponsors the registry, and it is administered by the government of Anguilla. Operational back-end services have been provided by Identity Digital since January 2025, according to a registry summary that lists the Government of Anguilla as operator. Registration terms run from a minimum of two years, with terms of two to ten years available.

The namespace is technically sound by standard measures. The registry supports DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) (DNSSEC: Yes). As of June 2026, the registry reported 1,277,727 registered domains.

Registration rules

Registration is open to outsiders. It is a ccTLD, however, it can be used by any individual or organization, not just those with an address in Anguilla. The one-to-one link between the zone and a territory therefore does not limit who may hold a name. Disputes over names are handled under the UDRP procedure, which applies to trademark disputes. Internationalised labels are not supported; historically only ASCII a–z, 0–9, and hyphen characters are permitted.

Origin of the name and the AI association

The two letters are the territory's ISO 3166-1 country code. As one overview puts it, the same alphabetical coincidence turned .io (the British Indian Ocean Territory) and .tv (Tuvalu) into tech darlings. The "AI" reading is therefore accidental in origin, but it has become the dominant one in practice. Many people use .ai to mean Artificial Intelligence, and .io to mean input/output.

Companies and projects in the field have adopted the extension as a domain hack. It is a popular domain hack with companies and projects related to the artificial intelligence industry, and examples such as bot.ai or wisdom.ai show the pattern in brand names.

Demand has grown quickly. One registrar's 2026 trend review, citing Verisign data, reports that .ai registrations are up 491% in the three years between Q1 of 2023 and Q1 of 2026. The count passed one million in early 2026. Reported daily averages rose further: an average of 1,318 new .ai domains were registered per day in 2025, while the average in January 2026 is around 2,008 per day.

Aftermarket and auctions

Premium names frequently change hands on the secondary market. High-profile sales include you.ai for $700,000 in September 2025, wisdom.ai for $750,000 in October 2025, and bot.ai for $1.2 million in February 2026. Expired-domain auctions form a separate revenue channel. One source reports that Identity Digital's newly launched auction service generated over $600,000 in additional revenue for Anguilla's government in its first year alone.

Classification and search treatment

Whether .ai is a country-code or a generic domain is contested in practice. In 2021, Google Search analyst Gary Illyes announced that ".ai" had been added to Google's list of generic country-code top-level domains, which means Google no longer infers Anguilla-specific targeting. An older registrar guide, however, states that the .AI domain extension is not considered generic by Google, meaning it always targets Anguilla. The two descriptions date from different periods, and the classification has changed since the earlier one.

For search visibility, one registrar argues that the .ai domain extension is treated the same as every other TLD when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO) and LLM answer engines. This is a commercial claim and should be read with that in mind.

Economic significance for Anguilla

Revenue from the zone has risen sharply. As per a 2018 New York Times report, the total revenue generated out of selling .ai domains was $2.9 million. By 2023, Anguilla's government made about US$32 million from fees collected for registering .ai domains; that amounted to over 10% of gross domestic product for the territory.

For 2025, reported figures differ. One account from the local press, drawing on Ministry of Finance monthly data, puts the total at EC$230 million (US$85.3m) from .ai domain registrations in 2025. Another gives a figure of revenue from .ai domain registrations and renewals totaled $93 million—47% of the government's budget. The minister responsible had earlier said that revenue from .ai domains made up less than 1% of our state income, by 2025 it will be around 47%.

Early 2026 figures continued the trend. Registration fees for Anguilla's .ai Internet domain brought in EC$217 million (US$80 million) in the first seven months of 2026, for a population of under 14,400. Officials said that after only seven months, government has already collected 76 per cent of the entire year's budgetary revenue.

The revenue is used for public purposes. Premier Cora Richardson Hodge noted in the 2026 budget that this "milestone" enables investments in infrastructure, like airport expansions. The government has also said it plans a sovereign wealth fund, supported mainly through .ai domain registrations.

Risks and open questions

Because the revenue depends on registration volume, renewals and aftermarket prices, it is exposed to changes in demand for AI-branded names. A decline in interest in AI, a shift in registrar pricing, or competition from other extensions would each affect the income. Public budgets built on a single source of this kind are particularly sensitive to such changes.

The reported numbers also vary by source. Population estimates range from under 14,400 to about 15,000, and 2025 revenue figures range from about US$85 million to US$93 million, partly because of currency conversions and differing definitions of revenue. Several sources are commercial or promotional, so the figures are best treated as approximate.

On sovereignty, the code's status is linked to its country code. One overview notes that a ccTLD is only retired if its ISO country code disappears, which makes Anguilla's control of the zone comparatively stable, even though the commercial value of the name is driven almost entirely by the AI industry rather than by the territory itself.
