      "text": "The Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA; Chinese: 鸿蒙智行) is an automotive alliance and sales network initiated and led by Huawei, the Chinese technology company. It brings together several traditional car manufacturers, which build the vehicles, while Huawei contributes product planning, software, intelligent driving systems, user experience, marketing and retail channels. Its brands sell electric and extended-range electric vehicles, most of them at the premium end of the Chinese market."

      "text": "Huawei's automotive involvement began in 2021 with a sales channel for vehicles made by partners, which was then known as the Zhixuan (智选) business. The first product of that period, the AITO M5, was announced in December 2021 and was developed with Seres Group, which handled the entire vehicle lifecycle at the time. Under that earlier arrangement, Huawei mainly supplied sales channels and controlled vehicle development jointly with its partners. On 9 November 2023, at the pre-sale event for the Luxeed S7, Huawei announced that the Zhixuan business would be upgraded into HIMA. The new structure was meant to go further: Huawei's HarmonyOS operating system would be built into the cars, and partners would work more closely on system integration and joint development."

      "text": "HIMA follows a division of labour in which Huawei does not manufacture cars itself. Huawei provides a complete set of vehicle solutions, covering product definition, design, marketing, user experience, quality control and delivery, while the partner manufacturers are responsible for vehicle production. Each partner specialises in a particular vehicle segment, and the partners' product ranges are intended not to overlap. This arrangement lets a technology firm influence the vehicle concept and the digital experience without taking on factories, suppliers and dealer logistics at scale.\n\nVehicles from all HIMA brands share a common technical base: the HarmonyOS in-car operating system and Huawei's driver-assistance and autonomous driving software. The shared software is intended to give users a consistent experience across brands. Analysts have described this as a way to pool Huawei's strengths in intelligent cockpits and driver assistance with the manufacturing capacity of established automakers."

      "text": "As of 2026, HIMA comprises five vehicle brands. AITO is produced with Seres Group and was the alliance's first brand. Luxeed is made with Chery and launched its first model in late 2023, followed by the R7 in mid-2024. Stelato is developed with BAIC BluePark, Maextro with JAC, and Shangjie with SAIC Motor; the SAIC brand was unveiled in April 2025 as the fifth member. The partnerships are structured through separate agreements, and some trademarks and design rights were transferred between Huawei and its partners. In July 2024, for example, Seres announced plans to pay 2.5 billion yuan for AITO-related trademarks and design patents held by Huawei."

      "text": "HIMA reported 444,956 vehicle deliveries in 2024, which the company said placed it first among Chinese new-energy automakers by volume, with an average transaction price of about 379,000 yuan. Cumulative deliveries passed one million in October 2025, about 43 months after the alliance's launch, and exceeded 1.3 million by March 2026. The company announced 1.56 million cumulative deliveries in early October 2026. Monthly figures have weakened since 2025: September 2026 deliveries were 37,490 units, a year-on-year decline of about 29 percent and the fourth consecutive year-on-year fall reported for that period. HIMA launched or opened pre-orders for several updated models in the spring and summer of 2026, including a set of nearly ten new vehicles introduced in March 2026."

      "heading": "Recent changes to the Aito partnership",
      "text": "On 15 September 2026, HIMA and AITO announced that AITO would adopt a new cooperation model within the alliance. Under it, Seres takes the lead on product definition, design, brand marketing, retail channels and service systems, while Huawei moves into a supporting role. The signing entity for authorised dealer agreements was transferred from a Huawei company to a Seres affiliate with effect from 16 September 2026. The companies stated that AITO remains a HIMA member and that existing customer rights and after-sales services are unaffected. Other brands, including Luxeed, Stelato, Maextro and Shangjie, continue under the model in which Huawei leads the whole process. Commentators have described the change as giving Seres more control over its premium brand and giving Huawei more flexibility to allocate resources across its other partners. A later report suggested that the two companies were holding further talks and might revise the arrangement again, although the cooperation model over Aito was reportedly unlikely to change in its core features."

      "heading": "Reception and open questions",
      "text": "HIMA's rapid growth is generally viewed as an unusual case in the Chinese electric vehicle sector, where a technology company supplies software and brand strategy to automakers. Critics and observers point to several uncertainties. The alliance's profitability for its partners has been questioned: the Seres net loss in the first half of 2026 and the rising costs of raw materials have been cited as evidence of financial pressure within the ecosystem. Dependence on a single technology provider for branding, channels and software also raises questions about how responsibility and revenue are divided among members, and the September 2026 change shows that these terms can be renegotiated. Because all brands are sold in mainland China, the alliance's future also depends on the domestic market and on how its brands fare against other electric vehicle makers. Sales have fallen in recent months, and the long-term effect of the Aito restructuring on HIMA's cohesion remains to be seen."
